M. Butterfly

138 W. 48th Street

The original M. Butterfly was a 1988 Broadway hit and the first by an Asian-American. The story is a provocative tale of a French diplomat that leaks state secrets to his Chinese lover. The lover is a male opera star that the diplomat (comically) mistakes for a woman. The new revision of M. Butterfly makes small changes to the storyline, but keeps the central themes intact and allows us to focus on the original intention of the piece, as a look into the fantasy of the Western male. In these respects, M. Butterfly is unique and a must-see.
