What to do in Times Square, New York A trip or a lifetime in New York City cannot be complete without a visit to Time Square. The iconic streets of Broadway and Seventh Avenue have been featured in countless movies and television programs, and then there’s the annual New Year’s Eve ball drop. No matter how you know of it, nothing can prepare you for the experiences that Time Square has to offer.

So what can you do in Time Square?

Mingle
Time Square is an intersection, so when you arrive, expect a lot of traffic and people. About 39 million people visit Time Square a year, so keep an eye out for your belongings, and then feel free to lose yourself in the crowd. Time Square is the most crowded at night, but don’t let that deter you from experiencing it in all of its beauty.

Throughout the day and into the night various street performers are present. Sesame Street characters can be found outside Toys “R” Us. Mickey and Minnie Mouse are often seen as well. The Naked Cowboy can also be found roaming the square with his guitar.

The bleacher seats above the TKTS stalls provide seating for the ultimate New York sport of people watching, as well as great views of the square. Be sure to take a moment to stop and watch all the people. Also don’t miss the New Year’s Eve ball. It sits atop the One Times Square building throughout the year.

Eat
Time Square offers many dining choices. Franchises and fast food are available, as are street vendors and small cafes. The Hard Rock Café is located just below 44th and Broadway. Restaurant Row (46th Street between Broadway and 9th Avenue) boasts international cuisine and grants New Yorkers a chance to try something a little different. Starbucks has numerous locations scattered throughout.

Time Square is also home to Junior’s Restaurant. Originally founded in Brooklyn in 1950, Junior’s offers deli sandwiches, burgers, and other great American diner fare, but they are famous for their cheesecakes. Be sure to stop by for a slice. The Red Velvet Cheesecake is spectacular.

Shop
Of course, a place so well known for its advertising also has many options for shopping. Within the square and the surrounding areas, New Yorkers can browse the merchandise of American Eagle, Quicksilver, MAC, Disney, and Forever 21. The Hershey Store and M&M World face off at the intersection of 48th and Broadway. Toys R Us not only offers kids and parents a chance to shop to their hearts’ content but a ride on an indoor Ferris wheel as well.

Watch and Experience
Time Square has something for everyone’s entertainment needs. Concerts and comedy shows play throughout the area, and Madam Tussaud’s Wax Museum and the Discovery Museum are also available. What Time Square is most known for, however, is its association with Broadway musicals and theatre. TKTS offers discount tickets for same day theatre performances. The stalls in Time Square generally open from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM, but check the sign outside for other times as well.

Transportation:
42nd/Time Square station is a major subway hub, connecting to lines 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, and the 42nd Street Shuttle.
