Presented by 106.7 Lite FM, “Broadway in the Park” has become a New York summer tradition. Every Thursday for six consecutive weeks Bryant Park plays host to a free concert of famed musical theatre just in time for lunch. Bryant Park has offered New Yorkers a chance to sample Broadway musicals annually for the last three years.

All performances are done by current cast members. The music choices are varied with performances from musicals that have become New York fixtures like The Phantom of the Opera as well as song selections from up and coming musicals and plays.

Each Thursday features four to five musicals. In between performances the audience is introduced to cast members and given a short summary of the play’s story. They are also given information as to where to see the show in its entirety should the audience members hear a song they like. In addition to the music, 106.7 Lite FM partners with New York corporations and organizations to provide their audience with raffles and gifts.

The concerts are held on the green in Bryant Park right behind the New York Public Library. Seats are set up before the show begins, but audience members may grab more chairs from the promenades surrounding the green or bring their own blankets to sit on. As the concerts are held midday, it can get quite hot in the sun, but choosing to escape to the shelter of the shade on the edges of the green will not detract from the performance.

In addition to the free concert, park visitors have access to various food vendors and the park’s attractions and features, which comes in handy since the performances begin at midday. Bryant Park is a beautiful place with well-kept grounds and gardens. It also features Le Carrousel, a beautiful carosel for children. Rides cost $2. Plus, one may borrow a book from the outdoor Reading Room or play a game of chess or backgammon. All of these features are accessible during the concert and are all within earshot of the stage.

Upcoming Schedule for Broadway in the Park:
August 9: Chicago, Rebecca, Evita, and Rent
August 16: Nice Work If You Can Get It; Avenue Q; Bring It On, the Musical; Rock of Ages; and A Christmas Story
